Additional information: W. F. Saarberg and J. W. van der Scheer both studied architecture
at the Polytechnical College in Delft. Van der Scheer besides
this also studied stage design at the Dramatic Conservatory in
Amsterdam.
After graduation both engineers worked together for several
years in a design institute , which later became their own company.
On the basis of an analysis of the circular stage and the thrust
stage, they developed in 1960 the idea of changeable acustics
in a rotating amphitheatre. This idea of a multi-purpose auditorium
was realized in the Cuitural Center at Alkmaar, where the
center of the auditorium is movable; with the aid of a hydraulic
hoisting system two floors emerge from the stage with 220 seats.
The ceiling, which can be openned, makes the hall especially
suitable for concerts, due to the optimum acustics which can be
achieved in this manner.
This system of changeable acustics demonstrates, that it is very
well possible to combine a concert hall and theatre auditorium.
Van der Scheer is at present on the staff of an international
design and consulting firm.
Saarberg since 1970 is on the staff of a state commission for
the study of the design and construction of theatrical and concert
halls.
