Francie
On the basic of his experience of forty years, Jean-Louis Barrault has decided to build a theatre where the stage and the seating area share a common space which reminds us of an arena — the stage is not separated from the audience by a proscenium arch. He has asked the stage designers from the Rond-Point Theatre to create ever new scenographie approaches which will utilize this highly original space, as well as the nature of the play to be staged. Also a second, small, angular
auditorium provides opportunities for stage design experiments, above all by Simone Benmussa and Jean-Pierre Granval.
The mutual interaction of space stage design creativity in the productions of the Renaud-Barrault Company have also led to particularly interesting lighting. Yannis Kokkos, who undoubtedly is the most outstanding personality of French stage design in recent years, has developed experiences of this type at the Palace Chaillot, in collaboration with Antoine Vitez its director. It was also he, who within the framework of a variable theatrical space has defined the seating area and its decorations as a component of the stage designs, which should be an extension, in harmony with the staging concept. In order to provide a more complete view of his designs we have included some of his other work into our exposition, which he produced for various stages throughout Europe.
