In Finland the theatre is a traditionally very beloved art and in recent years an interest in it has continued to grow. Under these circumstances the professions of scenic designers and costume designers have become more valued and there is an increased interest in them. Among the problems our scenographers face is periphery location of our country, which makes it difficult to maintain foreign contacts and exert an influence. On the other hand we have in Finland a strong tradition of design, which also influences stage and costume art. Among our most difficult problems and at the same time the source of the greatest demand for our scenographs during these last few years are the new theatre buildings and their often too big stages, which are not always built according to the wishes of theatre performers. The development of theatrical lighting is one of the most important aspects of a scenographer´s work hand in Finland greater stress on this area is now only beginning. However, the Theatre Academy has forge ahead and since the autumn 1986 a four year course for the education of light and sound designers are offered there. The Theatre Academy also has a department for completing theatre education, which offers numerous annual short term courses both for set and costume designers and for technical personnel. For example in the spring of 1986 ten highly experienced costume designers took part in teaching ten week courses.

• Riina AHONEN

Additional information: Born in 1945 in Helsinki, costume designer. Between 1964 and 1972 sne worked as a sound engineer in the theatrical department of the Finnish Broadcasting Company. She studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Helsinki /1972-75/, at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague /1975-76/ and at the Finnish Theatre School /1977/. She designed costumes for Goethe' s Faust and for the play The World is Still Young by E. Sinervo. Among her more important work are costume designe for Molière' s The Miser, for the Porin Teatteri, for Strindberg' s Master 0laf, for the Tampereen Työväenteatteri, for García Lorca' s Rosita the Single, for Turun Kaupunginteatteri and for Katz' Threeheaded Buddha, for the Suomen Kansallisteatteri. She also works for films and television. At the Triannial at Novi Sad in Yugoslavia in 1978 she received a Silver Medal.

Additional information: Born in 1936, a costume designer and actress. She studied at the Academy of Applied Arts, at the Finnish Theatre School and at the Studio of Dramatic Art at Tampere. Since 1961 she is active as an actress and costume designer. She has collaborated with foremost Finnish theatres and with the Finnish Vleísradio. During 1961-63 she was at the Televlsion Theatre, then at the Tampereen Tyovaenteatteri and at the Municipal Theatre of Helsinki. At present she is working as a costume designer for the Municipal Theatre in Turku. She participated in the Prague Quadrennial in 1975.

Additional information: Between 1961 and 1966 she studied at the School of Textiles and Clothing in Helsinki. Her further studies were made possible by the Aino-koti foundation in 1969, a Czechoslovak state scholarship in 1970 and a scholarship from the Finish Cultural Fond in 1971-72. During 1970 to 1972 she studied at the Academy of Creative Arts in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. She gained her first experiences with work in a theatre at the Municipal Theatre in Kuopiu between 1967 and 1970. Since 1972 she is at the Municipal Theatre in Helsinki. In 1975 she obtained a State grant. She participated in the Prague Quadrennial in 1971, where she exhibited her work within the framework of the exposition of the Bratislava Academy of Creative Arts; in 1975 she participated in the Triennial of Stage and Costume Design in Novi Sad in Yugoslavia.
