The Bulgarian exposition presents at the Prague Quadrennial 1971 scenic designs having for the most part been created for the domestic dramatic production. The motives readily occur: the playgoes' interest directs itself towards the contemporary problems, towards the liberation of the country, towards the national classical period. The building-up process within the socialist society has a considerable bearing on 1he development of the Bulgarian stage design. Not long ago the number of Bulgarian plays showing a high artistic level was insufficient, and the stage design got under a strong influence from abroad, on losing thereby its national character. At present the Bulgarian stage designers are forcing their own way. Within the scope of artistic creation they already have acquired a remarkable position. The great number of stage designers exhibiting their works at the Prague Quadrennial demonstrate distinctly the way and the perspectives of the young Bulgarian scenography that has not a long tradition yet. Simple illustrations and features borrowed from abroad stepped back and have been replaced by a philosophic interpretation of the dramatic works and by a close liaison between the décor and the idea of the play. It is true, from the technical point of view problems are still extant, but the Bulgarian art of stage and costume design is going to enter a period of matured creation, enriching that way the national theatre by remarkable achievements.
