Taking Flight
Reflecting on the UK schools exhibit in recent PQs which have consisted of both two and three-dimensional artefacts representing performance events and coursework, the UK Theatre Design courses collectively decided it was time for a change. Responding to the UK national theme of Collaboration, we wanted an exhibit that represented the student agenda in all its diversity. We felt that the best way to do this was for the students themselves to express their visual ideas in real space and real time. Twenty-five courses spread across the length of the country have been involved in the collaboration, each with a different emphasis, philosophy and student profile. Alongside the professional UK national exhibition, held in Nottingham in January 2007, a series of one day workshops brought together students from two or three different courses each day to respond to a simple phrase, ‘Taking Flight’ – in whatever way they felt appropriate. The exhibit in Prague uses asimilar structure in order to both present a record of that collaboration, and to create ten new shared responses in the wider context and spirit of PQ.
