Aristophanes' "The Birds"
The theme for the Student Section of Korea is in line with that of the Scenofest, that is, set or costume design for Aristophanes’ “The Birds.” The universality in the classic play creates common ground for contemporary audience with the ancient Athenians. People in the world always hope to come up smelling like a rose. They wish to fly the coop in faith that there should be better place than this miry world. The faithful and the hopeful are protagonist and deuteragonist in search for the Never-Neverland. The motifs like flight and height are identified with the birds. The flight accommodates faith and hope to reach the height. Consequently, verticality becomes crucial in creating the local habitation of the symbolic characters in the play. All are encouraged to see the uniqueness in contemporary Korea through the designers’ imagination.
