Because of its multiple conceptual and formal meanings, the stages that have best defined scenic art in Buenos Aires over the last four years are those whose designs acknowledge the relationship between theatrical time and theatrical space. Like Chinese puzzle boxes, the theatrical architecture enfolds the theatrical space: the stage. The stage in turn contains the scene, and the scene the scenery. In this overlapping of space, time is entwined. The extensive time of the architecture, the active time of an art director’s management within the space, and the rapid passing time of creation and performance. In the last four years, certain sets have brilliantly achieved this balance; this interpenetration of time and space, between the permanent and the ephemeral.
