REANIMOGRAPHY
The objective of a puppet film is to give a puppet a breath of life, thus animating an inanimate object. In cinema just like in theatre, public expectations and hidden desires are projected into an abyss, which literally and metaphorically looks back at the spectator. Literally, because the space facing the audience seems to stare at the spectator just as the latter stares into it; and, metaphorically, because the cinematic / scenographic space, which manifests its presence through objects, characters, forms, light, sound and colour on a flat screen, also seems to have a mind of some kind. For nearly ten years in partnership with the puppet film studio OY Nukufilm, the scenography students of the Estonian Academy of Arts have been learning the art and craft of puppet animation. This current installation includes a tiny character lying unconscious on a hospital bed with a monitor image oscillating between flashbacks and heartbeats, a modest attempt to capture the inter life of a re-animated puppet.
