Going to Mean Houses
“As dawn is breaking I knock, with a letter of introduction in my hands, at the door of Mrs. B’s house. This letter, of which there are two copies, (the other copy, crowned with an official stamp lies safely with the registrar) authorizes my visit. A young boyish man opens the door, holding a little notebook and apen in his left hand. Smiling, he says that yes, he was expecting me, and introduces himself: “K., housekeeper, master of a strange house, after having failed to be master in his own home.” He asks to please excuse the pun but he is just reading, strangely enough, about a man who dreamt about dissecting the lower part of his own body. “M.,” I reply, “stage designer, I prefer the scales 1:25 and 1:50.” “Please come in, but watch out, there is a small crack between the threshold and the floor,” he replies and writes something in his booklet. The door of the house closes behind me.“ Basel set and costume designer Muriel Gerstner (1962) is representing Switzerland for this Quadrennial in Prague. Following a suggestion from the Swiss Federal Design Commission, the Federal Office of Culture has invited Muriel Gerstner, who currently lives in Lucerne, to exhibit her work. In 2002 M. Gerstner was voted Newcomer of the Year in the critics’ poll for the Theater Heute journal in the set design category for John Gabriel Borkman and in 2006 Best Set Designer of the year for her work on Dark Alluring World. In 1997 and 2000, she won the Swiss Federal Design Grant for Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle (d: Dieter Kaegi, Strasbourg) and Salvatore Sciarrino’s Luci Miei Traditrici (d: Reinhild Hoffmann, Lucerne) respectively.
