The Land Under White Wings
The rebirth of the Belarusian culture and the preservation of its spiritual traditions are especially important for the dramatic art of Belarus. The Belarusian theme, The Land Under White Wings, is brilliantly evinced in the exhibits of designer Victor Timofeyev. The level of presentation is striking, especially his scale models and sketches for the The Wild Hunt of the King Stakh (based on Vladimir Karatkevich’s novel), which clearly demonstrate, the beauty and the force found in the production. These are matched by the expressive scale models and sketches representing the production of Belarus in Fables by J. Borshchevsky. The sketches for Ballad About Love (based on V. Bykov’s motifs) are characterized by adynamic understanding of the material. Another designer to note is Tatyana Sokolovskaja, who introduces her latest sketches and scale models which she created for the production of The Destroyed Nest by the great Belarusian playwright Yanka Kupala, directed by A. Gartsuev for the Grodno Regional Drama Theatre. The artist emphasizes the theme of the piece by creating a fantastic and intricate house. Valery Rachkovsky offers an interesting image of History of One City (M.E. Saltykov-Schedrine, dir. A. Janushkevich, State Puppet Theatre). The sketch of the artist is ironic and sarcastic. It adds much in the understanding of the main characters of the show. The scale model of the Rat Catcher (dir. O.Zhjugzhda, Brest Puppet Theatre) stands out for its meticulousness and delicacy.
