The theatrical designer is like a tightrope walker crossing a thin wire of budget restrictions over a waterfall of multiple events. Often times, the balancing act required to arrive at the end of the rope is difficult, some even say impossible, but some designers are not only able to cross their wire efficiently, but they do so with pirouettes executed with aesthetic beauty and precision. Like the tightrope walker, the objective of the designer is to arrive at the end without losing the harmonic nature of his act. The designer’s added bonus is the ability to do the job with renewed imagination every time. The concept of ‘imagination’ is so yearned for, yet so difficult to define that some have formally called it ‘creativity’ and many others, perhaps too many, have superficially called it ‘fantasy’. However, if we were to ask ourselves what exactly is ‘imagination’, we would say that it is the capacity to establish combinations of images, concepts and feelings without resorting to topical references. We can not forget, however, the aforementioned thin wire that the designer has to cross while maintaining a harmonic balance. The objective of this exhibition is to explore the intricate workings that lie between intrinsically restrictive budget realities and the designer’s imagination. In terms of artistic yield, the formula is mathematical: the show is created by the division of the imaginative contribution by the invested money. The artistic ‘profit’ will be lost if too much money is invested with not enough imagination. The most desirable scenario is a significant investment of imagination with little money, because this way the artistic quality of the show will be infinite. And if there are few notable pirouettes, even better.
