BYUNG BOC LEE: DISCOVERY Throughout my career rather, then using sophisticated artijicial materials, I have chosen to make use of natural materials, though they may seem crude or childish by comparison. When I have created art for ťhe stage using traditional Korean mulberry paper or herbage (preferring materials that have had minimal chemical treatment or none at all), the various effects produced on the stage create an atmosphere characteristic of the East. As in Oriental brush-and-ink paintings, with their abundance of unpainted white space, my works are characterized by the tendency to leave a great deal of the stage empty. IN THE EMBRACE OF NATURE The philosophy of reincarnation and that of the intimate connection between the body and the earth, called "shint'oburi" in Korean, are fundamental to my life and to all my scenographic works. That is to say, my work is concerned with birth, life and death. In other words, our coming into this world, our stay here and our return to whence we came. I have tried to condense this theme and express it in my own particular way in the space provided in the PQ. I have chosen this theme because it is an eternal one for all humanity.
