Argentina

The debate between ideology and aesthetic that could have characterized the development of the theatre during the XX century, has been strongly expressed in Argentina in proportion as it has been becoming from one of the richest countries in the world into another poor, with increasing masses of unemployed and marginal people. It was difficult to express only aesthetics on the theatre stages, recreational searching of the ancient magic of the theatre. The stages became more important as tribunes of the reflection and polemics around that society. This situation reinforced for awhile the idea that realism, and even naturalism established the way of expression nearest to that conflict, that was debated on the street. But there also appeared the vanguard that abandoned abstraction and began to express themselves in other ways, by other forms. Argentine theatre spectator has assumed a principal role. He comes to the theatre, searching for answers: he comes to find vital hopes to replace the dead ones that remainded on the way together with redeemed Utopias of the last century. The labyrinth now is the theatre, settled in front of the emptiness of the existence. Maybe at the end of the labyrinth a paradise image of a better life, a human life, life filled with love has appeared.
