SERVICO SOCIÁL DO COMERCIO SÁO PAULO The option chosen by the commissioner to represent Brazil in the Thematic Section was to present an institution which, in the last decades, has contributed decisively to the performing arts in the Country. SESC - Servico Sociál do Comercio de Sáo Paulo - acts in the cultural area as a producer of venues, theatre productions, national and international festivals and especially in the construction of theatre buildings, which has already numbered twenty in the State of Sáo Paulo. It also develops experimental and research projects in the fields of leisure, sport and education. The exhibition has, as one of its goals, the intention to show in the Quadrennial the work developed by this institution, already known abroad by dozens of groups that had the opportunity to perform in Brazil sponsored by SESC. The highlight of the exhibition, besides the theatre building projects, is the work from CPT - Centro de Pesquisas Teatrais do SESC-SP (Centre for Theatrical Research / SESC-SP), co-ordinated by Antunes Filho. The exhibition shows part of this output developed over 16 years and respected both at home and abroad. An Initiative of Cultural Diffusion The Sociál Service of Commerce - SESC, is a private institution created and maintained by commerce, developing a nationwide action centred on social education, leisure, culture, sports and social tourism, child development, dentistry, healthy and cheap nourishment, enviromental education and special activities for the aged. Each of the 26 centres has its own characteristic. They can be urban or rural, some are holiday resorts, some specialise in cinema, theatre, sports, social tourism or dentistry. In the cultural field, they're aimed at encouraging many artistic forms. This practice is always based on two principle concepts: on one hand, incentives in research and on the other, to achieve a democratic and effective social, cultural action.
