Great Britain
TIME + SPACE - is a celebration of the diversity and richness of current theatre practice in Great Britain. In the previous exhibition, MAKE SPACE!, categorisation of the material by different types of performance space helped the visitor engage with the moments, worlds and stories which were presented in the form of model boxes, drawings, photographs and artefacts. Four years later, we hope to have created an equally enjoyable and interesting way for viewers to encounter the work of British designers, by taking as our theme space and its partner, time. TIME + SPACE considers how designers explore the elements of time and space in performance and as fundamental aspects of the artistic and technical production process. The work is organized under eight headings: Design Process; Narrative Time; Once Upon a Time; Periods Recreated; Time Transposed; Allusions to Time; Movement in Time and Space, Colour and Light in Time and Space. These do not seek to categorise designers, who often work across many different areas of performance. Rather, the selection asks: " How do we present this material so that it is relevant to us and our audience now, in this time, in this place?" We hope that this way of questioning, of batting ideas to and fro, will illuminate the images seen and the decisions designers take about how to present unfamiliar stories or themes, or re-present the familiar.
