Spain - Catalonia

The Spain / Catalonia exhibition shows some of the best suggestions for the use of theatrical spaces and costumes which our artists háve created over the last four years. This range extends from the invention of unique total universe - visual as well as plot, very peculiar to some creators, to the spaces ušed in the rendition of a dramatic text, which they light for their beauty, originality and their artistic impact. A large part of these productions has been performed in Barcelona, the centre of Catalan theatre-life. Others, however, háve been performed in venues around Spain and abroad.

Specialization: teacher, set designer, costume designer
Additional information: Stage, costume, props and masks designer. Qualified in scenography and stage direction from the Theatre Institute (the Institut del Teatre) in Barcelona. Since 1973 professor at the Theatre Institute in Barcelona (mask and scenic sculpture). Mostly he collaborates with the open-air theatrical group "Comediants". Participated in the PQ in 1995.

• Montse Amenós

* 1954, Barcelona
Additional information: Born in 1954 in Barcelona. She is stage and costume designer, art director and ephemeral productins maker. Graduated from the Institut del Teatre and currently works in her own studio for various theatres. She has taught in the Institut del Teatre, Escola Eina of Barcelona, and other various courses and seminars. In 1991 and 1999, she participated in the PQ. Awarded the National Prize of Scenography 1986, Film Industry Prize of Generalitat de Catalunya 1989 and the "Goya" Award for the Best Costume Design 1990.

Additional information: He is active in Barcelona, especially with stage director Jordi Messalles, and in the Basque country. He is professor of machinery and scenographic construction at the Institut del Teatre. Graduated in ceramics and sculpture from the School Massana and in scenography from the Institut del Theatre, where he teaches a construction technology. Currently he operates as stage designer for various companies and directors, especially Joan Ollé. In 1991, 1999 participated in the PQ, in 1995 awarded for The Best Scenography in the First "Max" Awards and in 1996 and in 1998 received the Critics Award for the Best Scenography.

Additional information: Born in 1948 in Barcelona. Qualified in scenography from the Institut del Teátre, currently co-operates as stage and costume designer with theatres, film and television and he also works as teacher in the Institut del Teatre and Escola Superior de Cinematografia de Catalunya. In 1991, participated in the PQ. He received National Theatre Award in 1986, Film Industry Prize of the Generalitat de Catalunya 1988 and the "Goya" Award for the Best Costume Design 1990.

Additional information: Born 1952 in Barcelona. A painter, he often cooperated with theatre stage directors. He was a member of the team in the show El Público. He graduated from Nos Estudis de Teatre and currently works as stage and costume designér, especialiy for Teatre Lliure and Gelabert - Azzopardi Company of Dance. In 1991, he participated in the PQ.

Additional information: Born in 1969 in Tortosa. She studied at the Winchester School of Arts, and the School of Fashion Techniques. Currently she operates as costume designer.

•   LA FURA DELS BAUS

Additional information: LA FURA DELS BAUS - is the theatrical group of stage designers and directors, created in 1978 in Barcelona. This group participated in the PQ in 1991 and 1995. Was awarded with lot of international prizes. A collective which has only carried out three productions since 1983, when it started, until 1988, and which has had, however, an important international repercussion. The responsibility for the scenographic creation of its works is assumed by the whole group.
• Jaume Plensa

Additional information: Born in 1955 in Barcelona. Sculptor, painter, stage and costume designer. He collaborated with the group La Fůra del Baus. Currently he co-operates with Salzburg Summer Opera Festival. Received the Chevalier des Arts and Lettres Republique Francaise, the Koine Prize in Italy and the National Visual Arts Award in Barcelona.
