Erlend Birkelands minimalistic design for the staging of Tarsei Vesaas novel The Birds gave both focus and space for Vesaas' text. In the world of the main character Mattis, a peculiar image of magie naturalism arose in this abstract setting, and the movement and interplay between the different means of the production were thus manifested. This was an untraditional way of staging Versaas in Norway and reflected a different spacial understanding and utilisation. The production was highly praised by the Norwegian press and Nils Sletta in the main character was awarded the Critic Prize 1998.
