Plungé Additional information: Born in 1969 in Plungé. He graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Painting. He collaborates with Lithuanian National Drama Theatre in Vilnius and takes part in various exhibitions with paintings.
ŽILVINAS KEMPINAS didn't come to the theatre because he had intended to become a stage designer. He studied in Vilnius Academy of Arts, not in Stage Design, but in the Painting Department. He works mainly in the field of conceptual installation and his relation to the contemporary theatre is typical of the sharpened attention to the theatre phenomenon by the new generation of Lituanian Artists. Kempinas seeks to form a new image of the theatre by the maximum use of creative tools, ignoring the taboos of the reality of the stage. His scenery and costumes to the performance P. S. File O. K. by young Lithuanian playwright Sigitas Parulskis, expresses a totally new attitude to the possibilities of creating the theatrical image. He turned the space of the stage into a apocalyptic installation, employing all possibillities of the moving stage for its operation. For this work, Žilvinas Kempinas was awarded the St. Christopher prize as the best stage designer of the Lithuanian theatre season of 1997/1998.
