For the past ten years the United States Institute of Theater Technology (USITT) has conducted an annual awards program for theater architecture. This program was established to bring public and professional recognition to architectural projects of design excellence. These projects varying in size, thoughtfully resolve the aesthetic, regulatory, technical and operational challenges for old and now theatres. While the awards program is open to theatre projects and design teams from around the world, due to the guidelines for this exhibit, we have included only those winning projects that are from the United States. The projects included in the theater architecture exhibit represents the award winners from 2000 through 2003, the past four years of this program. The winning projects are almost evenly divided between new construction and renovation, acknowledging the desire to explore the possibilities of new technologies and artistic expression in the world of live theatre and the responsibility to preserve the legacy of historic theatres.
