Scenarist of the exhibition: Serge Creuz
Besides the large drama and opera repertory theatres, which have existed for a number of years, several young, enthusiastic groups have been formed in recent years. They are often orientated especially towards experiments and their existence is often unsure, in Brussels, as well as in the whole of Wallon. Other groups are devoted to playing for children. A potential theatre goer, both young and old, sometimes has trouble making a choice. Of course in the large cities as well as in the country-side, because decentralization has greatly advanced. But of course the country is not very large.
Such intensive theatre life requires new space - and new theatres have also been organized. Halls untouched by the theatre and without preliminary installations seem to comply to a much greater extent to the programmatic endeavours of young groups. This increased activity clearly provides stage designers with the possibility of expression in various directions. Even if it is not limitless, nevertheless the demand for stage designers is much greater than previously.
Thus the students who graduate from the stage design studio of ENSAAV de la Cambre, lead by prof. Serge Creuz, almost immediately find employment. They often are able to collaborate with the former students of dramatic art /INSAS or IAD/.
The Belgian exposition in Prague does not attempt to show all stage design production during the last four years. Thus only a sample has, of necessity, been chosen. In spite of this we hope that we are able to call forth a general idea concerning the variability of stage design forms in the French speaking regions of our country.
