The National Center for Theatre Documentation, which guarantees the maintaining of artistic elements in theatre presentations in Spain, is also responsible for their representation abroad. At the occasion of the Spanish participation in the Prague Quadrennial it is happy to present the most important work in stage design of the last five years.
An important place in our exposition is devoted to Francisco Nieva, an internationally acknowledged painter, who since the sixties has made an important impact upon stage design in our country; he was soon followed by Vicente Vela and Fabian Puigserver, who represent two artistic schools with great painting traditions - in Sevilla and in Catalonia. With these artists Spanish stage design has taken a decisive step forward; the integration of stage and costume design as a single and absolutely necessary artistic component of every presentation. The imagination, colours and graphic forms have become the cornerstone of theatre action, while the mobile elements of new stage designs provide presentations with a dynamism in the service of drama.
The stage designs of Manuel Lopez, whose work is closely connected with almost all theatre presentations in the last thirty years and five maquettes by students from the San Fernando School of Graphic Arts in Madrid, supplement the Spanish exposition.
