Scenarist of the exhibition: Prof. Traian Niţescu
If the Rumanian exposition at the 1975 Prague Quadrennial were to provide a representative sample, which would not unjustly overlook any Rumanian stage designer and which would at the same time reflect the variety of the work done in this field in the period between 1971 and 1975, it would require a much larger space then the one available at such a broadly based international exhibition as the present one. This fact has of necessity led us to a choice of such work, whose sum would, in the best possible manner, acquaint the visitor of the exhibition with the characteristic traits common to all Rumanian stage designers and which thus determines their place in contemporary theatre art throughout the world. The most valuable creative means are placed into the service of the idea in a work of drama; theatrical space is arranged according to architectural criteria; the technical means available are subjected to the artistic aim of the production; a, permanent contact with the most contemporary developments in stage design is maintained, so that the means of expression used are in harmony with the present and are able to enhance the value of the best traditions of Rumanian stage design.
The exposition of Rumanian stage design is presented as a single whole, but its real dimensions can be understood only on the basis of becoming acquainted with the work of the younger generation, educated at the Nicolae Griorescu Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest. This younger generation, whose most characteristic traits are talent and iniciative, has gained mastery and experience in its own specific manner. We are thus witnesses to the formation of new personalities, who seek their own manner of expression, by means which are subjected to those criteria, which bind up stage design with the surrounding life.
Both Rumanian stage design sections, which are shown at the 1975 Prague Quadrennial, are supplemented by several items concerning theatre architecture. The exhibits show several of the newest buildings, which in recent years have been passed on to the use of both professional and amature theatrical groups.
