BULHARSKO
Bulgarian stage designers have sent their work to the Prague Quadrennial already for the third time; their aim is to call the attention of the theatrical public throughout the world to the new assets they have gained. Bulgarian stage designers have long ago overcome trends to merely illustrate, as well as decorativness or symbolism. If during the first stage of development the material facilities of a theatrical performance were in the forefront, then the present fundamental creative approach gives priority to the realisation of a common goal, i.e. the theatrical performance. Among Bulgarian stage designers and stage directors there prevails a spirit of creative community which is subjected to this new aspect and which has led to a clearer manifestation of theatrical phenomena and to a permanent trend which seeks a plastic and graphic expression, thus giving Bulgarian stage design a modem outlook, as well as a national form. The principle which expresses this development is broadly based: a programatic approach must not be replaced by proclamations; a certain stage designer of certain work of art cannot be proclaimed as expressing official trends. Our aim is not to produce imitations, but to form creative artists with individual artistic and dramatic means of expression and unalienable methods of work. So much concerning the principles which have inspired the Bulgarian stage design exposition; it wishes to make a contribution to the support of creative freedom and creative socialist realism.
