RUMUNSKO

Works being exhibited for the first time at the Prague Quadrennial by the Rumanian Section, represent in various conceptions a selection of achievement; by a part of stage designers - running up to some one hundred sixty in total who work day by day in their field of activities, by a part of architects and technicians who devote their research-work to the theatre concerns or, realize projects referring to theatre constructions. The movement of those who work in this domain is characterized by a courage with which the most difficult problems are tackled, by a permanent search for the performance phenomenon in the light of the discovery referring to new forms of the dramatic expression. It appears to be necessary to point out that from the said total number or creators being throughout the country engaged in the rich activities within the scope of stage design merely seventy scenographers are at work in Bucharest, the rest of them being involved in the prodigious productions of professional or amateur theatres in various towns. The highly matured creators work side by side with the youngest ones, and are instrumental in bringing about an innovating breath which by far is not a privilege of the youth. The dominant characteristic in the creation of the Rumanian scenographers is — in spite of their different training — lying in the spatial conception of stage design with an architectural, sculptural, or pictorial tint. They exploit the most recent discoveries in the field of electrical engineering, in introducing confidently the new facilities being offered from the side of lighting engineering and of program controlled systems, in order to achieve a modern plasticity with the aim to emphasize the integral conception of the performance. In aiming at a revelation of the most successful scenographic creations, in demonstrating the diverse palette of performance forms and solutions of the theatre architecture and technique, the aforementioned selection tends to bring about a presentation of the most eloquent features referring to the Rumanian scenographic movement as well as a modest contribution to the success of that valuable initiative of the Czechoslovak stage designers. The Rumanian stage designers are with emotion waiting for the judgement both of the specialists and the common spectator, in being sincerely interested in a passionate search for new forms of the scenic expression, which is able to render back to the theatre its place side by side with the new arts, the film and the television being considered as sisters and not as rivals.
