JUGOSLÁVIE
Among the characteristic creations as for the development of the cultural life in socialist Yugoslavia the theatrical art fills a place of honor, and within its scope a decisive part appertains to the stage and costume design, to the stagy technique and to their realization facilities. These results are so much the more significant as they have been achieved after a century of independent theatre of the Yugoslav people. This theatre worked within the scope of extremely difficult and modest conditions and under strong foreign influences. After several decades within which the scenic creation was being governed by improvisation and often by dilettantism, as, quite simply, the theatre in Yugoslavia had merely a few authentic creators, its today's scenographic entity disposes of a whole pleiad of artists in all domains, of professional creators being at work not only in capitals of the republics but also in all regions of the country provinces. Many features have brought about a more favourable situation — the new Yugoslav culture has accepted different influences; criticism of the theatre, a large number of professional schools, numerous tours abroad, a great activity and the intention to demonstrate to the Yugoslav audience the best plays of various nations and countries have been instrumental as well. The results having been achieved in the field of stage and costume design — that we wish to present within the scope of this exhibition — stand out for a functional and simple treatment of the work and the mise en scene, for an excellent knowledge of the construction, for a useful employment of scenic lights, for adequate colours, and — above all — for a sensitive realization of the atmosphere being rid of any superfluous narrative tone and fully concentrated upon the story of the play.
