In spite of the fact that the Territorial Plan provides guidelines
for the general trend of construction in the country,
nevertheless every region maintains its specific conceptual
approach, so as to integrate the existing situation with the
natural environment and the potentialities of the area. This
is even more important when we are discussing cultural faci -
lities.
In the last four years we have designed three mutually greatly
different projects :
RIXHED : This is a community in the Haut- Rhin. Department with
6 000 inhabitants. It has constructed an urban center which includes
a center concentrating all cultural and religious institutions,
as well as social and educational facilities. We were
especially concerned with the design of the center in view of
local conditions.
AVIGNON : Thanks to the activities of Jean Vilar and his suc-
cessor Paul Puanx, the local governmant was able to justify its
demand for the building of a cultural center, especially de -
signed to hold collections, documents and a research center,
in collaboration with the National Library. This exceptionally
extensive and complex programme is a forerunner of the current
cultural policy of individual regions in French cultural life.
F0UGRES : This town has a population of 26 000 and in 1974 it
began, with help from the central government, to create its
environment and to increase the value of its historical heritage;
it devotes special attention to an activisation of cultural life
and this in turn has led to the building of a-multi-purpose
cultural center.
