Additional information: Designers and co-ordinators of the Finnish section of the exhibition referring to theatre architecture as well as designers of the exhibited slide show. The slide show is a result of numerous experiments and ideas having been realized in Finland outside the traditional theatre, in various multi-purpose localities and premises, and including also a number of unrealized projects and ideas having been designed or carried on by the aforementioned group. The performance aims at shaping a view on the wideness and variety of the abstract theatre and above all at reflecting the so-to-say unlimited possibilities as for choosing the physical milieu of a theatrical happening. Ideas, as: theatre brought to a home, into the street or to a factory, as well as the planning of different moving theares have been presened. The relationship of modern audiovisual equipments to the theatre has been researched as well. The slide show is trying to describe also the typical Finnish features on the theme. In fact, it is a multifarious composition of the theme referring to an exhibition of theatre architecture.
Obrázky z kataloguAdditional information: Born in 1926 at Kuopio. Architect. Graduated from the Institute of Technology in Helsinki. In 1953/54 was at work in Prof. Alvar Aalto's Office and in 1954/55 in the National Board of Housing. Own Office since 1955. As his main work can be considered the design to the University of Tampere the planning competition of which he won in 1958. The drama studio being presented at the PQ 71 is included in the said project. The construction of the university was finished in 1960. He has also planned schools Iin Helsinki and Kuopio. His projects include also several Office buildings, plans for housing areas and residential premises. He has been awarded numerous prizes within the scope of Finnish and international competitions. The drama studio or the theatre laboratory was built in 1966. The studio consists of a quadrangular, black painted compact area being connected with a lobby and a cloak-room for the public. The space can be grouped with the tube constructed auditorium elements being able to be put either next to or on one another. The stage is a revolving one.

Studied at the Institute of Technology in Helsinki, in the time between 1967 and 1969 acted as teacher, graduated in 1970. The City-Theatre project was designed as his graduate work in 1970. The conception of this theatre is firmly associated with the structure and activities of the city and is above all meant for experimental purposes. The theatre is placed in the middle of the busiest quarter of Helsinki being surrounded by offices, restaurants, cinemas, shops and department stores. The leading idea of the project is lying in the intention to erect a theatre with a maximum flexibility as to use. The auditorium and the stage form a homogeneous area being capable of transforming from a cinema or a traditional scene a l´italienne into a three-quarter or a total arena.

In 1969 he became lecturer at the Helsinki Institute of Technology. He has specialized in projects to schools and office buildings. He was awarded the first prize for the Administrative Centre of Jyväskylä, the third prize for the Municipal Theatre of Helsinki, the purchase prize for the Theatre of Umeä and several other prizes. He is the author of articles on architecture with reference to different special lines. He is hard at work in the Union of Finnish Architects (SAFA) and since 1970 also in the Research Centre of Tampere.

Completed his studies at the University of Helsinki and at the Institute of Technology, Faculty of Constructional Engineering. Own Office since 1962. He has specialized in projects to sports centres and schools. He was awarded the first prize for the Railway and Bus Station of Hyvinkää, the first prize for the Administrative and Cultural Centre of Hyvinkää. He has exhibited in different countries; he has been writing articles on architecture, lecturing at the Helsinki Institute of Technology, heading seminars etc. The Multi-purpose Centre of Hyvinkää is included in the Administrative and Cultural Centre of Hyvinkää (competition in 1964). The Centre is located in the heart of the city with a total population of 35.000. Within the Centre there are premises for the administration, offices, cultural services, edifices for young people, congress rooms and halls, two cinemas, a library, archives of recorded music, restaurants, cafes, department stores, shops, boutiques and stands. To the entirety belong also a public square, a central park and a market place. The theatre works within the area for cultural services, the multi-purpose hall being the main place. It is a sort of a zero point and an open introduction for the creative theatre activity and for new experiments also with reference to the traditional theatre. As to its size, spatial solution, shape, accoustics and sphere of activity the space is due to mobile chairs and wall units a flexible one. The Multi-purpose Centre itself, with its points of activity inside and outside, aims at creating new facilities for the different forms of the modem theatre.
Obrázky z kataloguAdditional information: Born in 1940 in Turku. Studied at the School of Fine Arts in Turku. From 1962-1965 he worked as assistant of stage design in the Turun Kaupunginteatteri. From 1970-1972 he taught stage design at the Drama Studio at the University in Tampere. Since 1965 he has been stage designer at the Turun Kaupunginteatteri. He worked as guest stage designer for the Stockholms Stadsteatern in 1973 and in Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri in 1974. He was awarded a Diploma of Honour at the Prague Quadrennial in 1971 and at the Novi Sad Triennial in 1972. His most significant works are The Life of Galileo, King Lear, Strindberg's Father.
