Svaz sovětských socialistických republik

The year 1967 marks the anniversary of the Soviet state. That is why every exhibition small or large, of groups or individuals is connected with the search which marked the half century long trend of development of Soviet art. The exhibit of Decorative Art of the Soviet Union held in March and April of this year in the Central Exhibition Hall in Moscow presented a survey of the principal stages of development in Soviet stage design, of the contemporary situation and the tasks for the future. The exhibit presented an ilustration of the fertile results of the development of stage design in recent years, a trend which went along the road of a free search of the multiple forms of portrayal and use of space, far from descriptiveness and illustrativeness which are characteristic for the naturalistic approach to decoration, without demonstrating original processes without purpose. Stage design today successfully combines the experiences of the Soviet Theatre, confirming the correctness of the principle of art direction which had always governed the Soviet stage, the strive for a generalization of poetic realism, for a maximum stress on the psychological and social essence of the stage work. The majority of artists represented at the exhibition held at the occasion of the Prague Symposium also took part in the Exhibit of Decorative Art in Moscow. Next to the well known artists, representatives of the older generation, such as V. Ryndin (chief designer of the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR), A. Lusin (chief designer of the Theatre of Music of K. S. Stanislavski and V. Němirovic Dančenko), I. Sumbatahvili (chief designer of the Central Theatre of the Soviet army), S. Junovich and N. Zolotarev, also young artist, successful in the greatest theatres throughout the Soviet Union: D. Borovski, V. Levental, B. Messerer, M. Romadin, T. Selvinskaja, V. Serebriakov, M. Sokolova, E. Stenberg and others will acquaint the Czech visitors with their work.
