Jugoslávie
The production of the Yugoslav theatre is represented at the First Prague Quadrennial by the Centre of Documentation Sterijino Pozorje, whose members have also designed and organized the competition of the exhibition. The exhibits themselves do not require a commentary; we feel however, that by acquainting the audience of the Prague Quadrennial with the work of the Institute which has designed the exhibition and indirectly also with the organization and state of theatrical affairs in Yugoslavia, we shall make our exhibition and its background more readily accessible to them. The Centre of Theatre Documentation Sterijino Pozorje was founded in Novi Sad in 1956 at the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth and the 100th anniversary of the death of J. S. Popović with the aim to support the promotion of Yugoslav drama, share in the progress of the contemporary theatre and to study its problems. In May of every year competentions of the best Yugoslav stage productions in the sphere of the national repertory are held in Novi Sad. The plays include three international triennials: Stage photography, stage and costume design, theatrical publications. The Centre of Theatre Documentation Sterijino Pozorje collects, publishes and studies theatrical documents referring to the contemporary Yugoslav, as well as world theatre. It publishes a Yugoslav review of theatrical art entitled The Stage and in its edition Dramatic Publications edits essays, articles and studies, as well as the texts of Yugoslav playwrights which have won the Sterija Prize. The competitive exhibition at the First Prague Quadrennial includes graphic illustrations of all professional stages in Yugoslavia, a selection of the best theatrical posters, costume designs from the national repertory in the form of drawings and mannequins and stage designs by Yugoslav authors which had been awarded prizes.
