Finnish stage design merits, without doubt, greater public attention than it received so far. A characteristic trait of contemporary Finnish scenography is the reduction of scenic elements, which are accentuated and which suffice to free the associative process in the interpretation of the spectators. Perhaps these characteristic traits are due to the fact that they were obliged to decrease their costs and not to waste any material. However, this economic pressure does not explain everything. Closer to the truth is that the contact between stage designing and architecture and between interior architecture and applied art was revived: here lies the source of the new forms corresponding to the national creative spirit.
