In 1947, already during his college days, he was appointed décor chief at the Grand Opera of 5th May in Prague and in 1951 art director of the Prague National Theatre. Up to this day he has brought into effect more than 300 stage sets for theatres at home and abroad. He has scored his greatest successes by his contribution to the performances of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, of The Seagull by A. P. Chekhov, of The Last Ones by M. Gorky, and among olhers also to the opera Intolleranza by L. Nono at the theatre La Fenice in Venice and in Boston. He is the author of Laterna Magica and of numerous polyecran scene variants. II is entirely owing to him that the workshops of the National Theatre have developed into a modernly equipped forge being capable of solving even the most pretentious technical problems. Apart from stage design concerns he engages intensively in an exhibition activity. His participation in the Czechoslovak exposition at the Brussels EXPO 58, at the World Exhibition in Montreal, Moscow, Turin etc. belong to his most prominent successes in this field of activities. In 1954 he was awarded the title Laureate of State Prize, in 1966 the titel of The Artist of Merit, in 1968 the titel of the National Artist. At the 3rd Theatre Biennial in Sao Paulo he was awarded the Gold Medal being destined for the best stage designer from abroad.
