Argentina

Argentine scenography is not rich in years but in the numbers of its artistic personalities and their creations. It is, at the same time, a true picture of its birth and development in the last fifty years, from the first descriptive scenes of the beginning of the century to the functional exploitation of stage space in the latest productions. A few names of stage designers of the 19th century confirm that stage design in the present sense of the word was then a very negligible element in the Argentine theatre. The first impulses for Theatre Colón (1908), with its workshop and with a number of foreign guest designers, became the founder of modern Argentine stage design. At the beginning it was mostly painters who devoted their time to stage desing, Rodolfo Franco, Abraham Vigo, Héctor Basaldua, Cregorio López Naguil, Soldi, Buttler, Larco, Angel and Alfredo Guido, Berni, Raquel Fornel and many others, who studied in Europe. Almost at the samé time a new group of independent stage designers began working, under the leadership of Facio Hebecquer, who develop in an almost laboratory manner the possibilities of plastic expression on the stage. Manuel Aguiar, Antonio Testa and Palmo Leiva were members of this group which later became the foundation of modern Argentine stage design. Rodolfo Franco established the Workshop at the Theatre Odeon, the College of Applied Arts establishes its chair of scenography, and so does the School of Arts at the La Plata University whose graduates are the first professional stage designers. Saulo Benavente, Gastón Breyer, Mario Vanarelli, Marciano Longarini, Luis Diego Pedreira, German Gelpi, José Varona, Carlota Beitía, Alice Darramón, Pablo H. Anton, Jorge E. Repetto, Nydia Dimitriades, Leandro H. Ragucci and Eduardo Fasulo, to name only the most important ones, have won recognition both on domestic and international scenes. At present there is a number of specialized schools in Argentina educating a new generation. Several of its members have attracted attention with their courage and new approach: Federico Padilla, Guillermo de la Torre, Maria de la Concepción Ramírez, Maria Julia Bertotto, Jorge Sarudiansky, Rolando Fabián and others.
