Just like its predecessors, this year's G.D.R. exhibition to the Prague Quadrennial endeavours to provide some insight into the methods and techniques used by our stage designers, who aim at close cooperation with the stage director. The most recent Prague Quadrennial 1979, like other theatrical exhibitions, made evident the problem which is inherent in exhibiting stage design: the need to separate and disengage the work of the visual artist which has a tendency to merge into a single whole of the performance with the work of the stage director, actors or singers, the music and last but not least also with the functioning of the stage technology used. For the purpose of carrying out this separation we have decided to show eight detailed and extensive coloured slide series, which we hope will provide an authentic impression of the evening performance, which is after all, the final objective of the stage designer's work.
