The French exposition at the Prague Quadrennial 1983 has been organized by the French Theatrical Centre of the ITI, under the auspices of the French Association for Artistic Activities and in cooperation with the Trade Union of Stage Designers and the French Association of Stage Designers and Stage Technicians (OISTT). The French selection submits the work of architects and stage designers which is characterized by pluralistic trends in means of expressions. Some architects and stage designers after the forming of a theatrical space also create the stage designs for productions in this theatrical space, so that they are able to verify for themselves the effectiveness of their project (Bernard Guillaumot). Other stage designers are on the other hand concentrating on how to place the audience around the performance of a play (Guy-Claude Francois). Still other stage designers are also the stage directors of the performance (Frangoise Grund) and some are even its authors (Beatrice Tanaka). While in past Prague Quadrennial exhibitions we were witnesses to the adaptation of stage designers to various architectures, such as multipurpose and variable auditoriums . . . (as can be seen in a number of new buildings), in Houses of Culture, Cultural Centres, Houses for All, in Houses of Culture for Youth, we now see the outline of a new trend, which seems to be directed at taking into consideration theatrical action as a whole. The stage designer is no longer satisfied with only expressing himself in a specifically and traditionally limited area, but is extending his contribution in multivarious ways.

Additional information: He has been stage manager and designer, as well as technical director.
After studying at the École du Louvre and at the École Nationale des Arts et Techniques du Théátre (production management and stage design) participated in the expe-rience of tho Théátre du Soleil with Ariane Mnouchkine. Also collaborated with film, drama and opera theatre. He works in museum design and as a designer of special events, liko tho opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Games in Alborvillo. His activities led him to teach-ing and co-ordinating the stage design department at the École National Superlóure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He holds a Silver Medal from the 1975 Prague Quadrennial for the sum of his stage designs at the Théâtre du Soleil.

Additional information: Born in 1935 in Tunisia. Painter and stage designer. He has cooperated with numerous French theatres and with films. He participated in the PQ in 1967 (the main Prize — the Golden Triga to French exposition) and in 1975.

Additional information: Born in 1930 in Strasbourg. He is the chief stage designer of the Opera in Lyon. He also cooperates with various French and foreign theatres. He exhibited at the PQ in 1967 (within the framework of the exposition which was awarded the main Prize — the Golden Triga), 1971 and in 1975.

Additional information: Born 1922 in Vincennes, stage designer and painter, specialized in mural design. Graduate from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Algiers. Césaire's A Season in Congo, Sartre's The Devil and the Good Lord in the production of G. Wilson, for Corneille's Surēre produced by H. Gignoux, and for a large number of plays produced at the Théâtre de Lutēce, Théatre Sarah Bernhardt, Théâtre de l'Est Parisien, Théâtre de la Cité de Villeurbanne, Odéon-Théâtre de France, Théâtre National Populaire, the Strassbourg National Théâtre, the theatre in Essen, Amsterdam and elsewhere.
