Additional information: Narozen r. 1896 ve Vídni, malíř a jevištní a kostýmní výtvarník. Absolvoval Akademii výtvarných umění ve Vídni a hudební akademii (zpěv). Do konce dvacátých let činný především jako karikaturista a malíř. Založil experimentální scénu a r. 1931 byl angažován Burgtheatrem jako jevištní výtvarník. Pracuje tam dodnes kromě krátkého přerušení v letech 1945-1948, kdy působil v Innsbrucku. Od r. 1939 navrhuje Salcburské festivalové hry, pracuje pro vídeňskou operu. Ze svých expresionistických počátků přešel k malířskému realismu.

Additional information: Born in 1895 in Bocholt, Westphalia, died in 1956. Stage and costume designer, graduate of the State School of Art in Düsseldorf, Munich and Berlin (School of E. Orlik). Worked for the State Theatre and Opera in Berlin, for the opera in Duisburg, the Berlin Schiller Theater, the Royal Opera in Stockholm, the Milano Scala, State Opera in Hamburg and Munich. His last place of work was the Municipal Theatre in Frankfurt am Main where he was chief designer. Many of his stage designs for the State Theatre in Vienna were made together with R. Kautky.
Obrázky z kataloguAdditional information: Born in 1926 in Halle/Saale. He studied painting at the Municipal Arts School in Giebichenstein. He made his debut with the stage sets for Hansel und Gretel, on the basis of which he became an assistant in the Municipal Theatre in Leipzig. Between 1950 and 1954 he was in Halle as first stage designer and between 1954 and 1961 he was chief stage designer with W.Felsenstein at the Komische Oper in Berlin. Since 1961 he lives as a free lance artist in Munich, while collaborating with numerous theatres at home and abroad, among others with the La Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He has designed the stage sets for the Salzburg Festivale, for theatres in Zürich, Vienna and elsewhere. Since 1964 he is a professor of stage design at the Academy of Arts in Munich. As a collaborator of Waiter Felsenstein he has gained international acclaim. He has been a guest stage designer at the Municipal Theatres of Frankfurt am Main, at the State Opera in Hamburg, the State Opera and Drama Theatre in Munich, the Opera and Drama Theatre in Zurich, the La Fenice Theatre in Venice. In 1963 he made his debut as a stage director. His productions of Lulu for Santa Fe in 1963, The Marksman for the Metropolitan Opera in New York and Measure for Measure in Munich should especially be mentioned. He has been a guest in Leipzig and in Berlin in the German Democratic Republic, where he collaborated on productions of the Ring, Kata Kabanova by Janáček, and The Magie Flute. He participated in the Prague Quadrennial in 1971.

Additional information: Born 1932 in Vienna, graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna in 1954 having studied under prof. E. Pirchan. His first engagement as stage designer was the Theatre in Biel-Solothurn and in Klagenfurt, later as assistant of Caspar Neher at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna and in 1962 after the death of Neher he became head of this school. At that time he also collaborated as stage and costume designer with theatres in Vienna, Salzburg, Kiel, Cologne and Glyndebourne. His work which concentrates mainly on designs for operas, is marked by a charasteristic musical harmony of colour and shapes.
Obrázky z kataloguAdditional information: Born in 1914 in Pskov. After graduation from a private art school in Paris she studied from 1928 at the Kunstschule des Westen in Berlin under E. Freytag and J. Bohland. During the war she worked in Geneva and in Paris. She designed her first stage set in 1945 for the Renaissancetheater and the Hebbeltheater in West Berlin, where she was until 1952. Then she collaborated with the Hamburg Schauspielhaus and State Opera. Among her most important stage designs are the sets for The Madwoman of Chaillot by Giraudoux, directed by Stroux; for A Streetcar Named Desire by T. Williams, directed by B. Viertel; for Preussisches Märchen by Blacher, and for Brod's dramatization of The Castle by F. Kafka, directed by A. Lippert. The designs to a number of stage sets for the grand operas of R. Strauss, Verdi and Mozart have made her one of the foremost stage designers working at present. She collaborates with theatres in West Berlin, Vienna, Salzburg, with the La Scala in Milan, The Metropolitan Opera in New York, with theatres in Glyndebourne, Edinburgh, San Francisco, Munich and elsewhere. In 1953 she obtained the West Berlin Great Prize and in 1971 the Prize of the Teatro Venice. At present she is working for the San Francisco Opera. She participated in the Prague Quadrennial in 1971.

Additional information: Born in 1910 in Cracow; he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna under Berthold Löffler. He began his career as an assistant to Alfred Kunz. He made his debut in films, among others also in Late Love with Paula Wessely. His first work for the theatre was for the production of Vagabunden in the Theater in der Joeefstadt in Vienna. He often collaborates with Otto Schenk. He has designed costumes for productions in Vienna for the Volksoper, the Burgtheater, the Akademietheater, the Theater am der Wien, as well as for the Salzburg festival, for theatres in Munich, Zurich, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Paris where he collaborated on Moses and Aaron at the Grand Opera in 1973.

Graduate of the University (Languages) and Academy of Art in Vienna, one of the founders of the Viennese Liberty Style. In 1902 asked by G. Mahler to cooperate with with the Vienna Hofoper. Since 1906 cooperated with M. Reinhardt, with the Munich and Salzburg Theatre. Lectured at the same time at the School of Applied Art, at the Academy of Art and the Seminar of Max Reinhardt. Continued in the sense of the postulates of Appia and Craig which he transferred to painting. He is the author of the so-called Roller towers, which makes a quick change of scene possible and which he used for the first time in the staging of Don Giovanni in 1906. Colour in his work has a symbolic function and shapes an expressive quality.

Architect, stage designer, graduate of the Technical College in Vienna, lecturer at the Vienna School of applied Art and the Max Reinhardt seminar. Author of a number of private and public buildings. Since 1915 stage designer at the Vienna Volksoper and since 1917 he worked also for the Reinhardt Theater in Vienna and Berlin. In the twenties he worked for the Burghtheater, the State Opera and the Volkstheater in Vienna and for the Salzburger Festspiele. Typical for his work, which developed from expressionism to a new sobriety and a purely theatrical expression, is the directing stage design conception and architectonic elements.

He began his carcer at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg in 1953. Later he worked for the Schlossparktheater and the Schillertheater in Berlin, the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, the Landestheater in Darmstadt, the Schauspielhaus in Bochum, the Municipal Theatres in Franfurt, the Residenztheater and the Schauspielhaus in Munich, and for the Burgtheater and the Akademietheater in Vienna. He participated in the Salzburger Festspiele and worked as guest designer for the Städtische Oper in Berlin and the Zurich Opera. From 1961 he has been head of satge design at the Kammerspiele in Munich, and he collaborates with a number of German, Austrian and Swiss theatres. From 1968 he also designs sets for the Basler Theater, for the Nürnberg Opera and the Staatsoper in Munich. He participated in the exhibition of Swiss stage design: From Appia until Today and the Prague Quadriennial 1967.
