Life Stages – Impromptu Encounters

The exhibition title, Impromptu encounters, suggests an unplanned performance or meeting, which is the very unique idea driving this design concept from the outset. Typically, theatre complexes have very clear separation between the enclosed auditoria and the front of house public areas. At PAC the auditorium design incorporates windows allowing views from the public areas. This unique idea creates an interesting and unexpected event. Within the auditorium the public watch a performance on the stage, where outside the auditorium the performance includes the public within the theatre space. Further impromptu encounter’s occur in the surrounding landscape where performers and public mix, and where the architecture and landscape becomes the scenery. The clever design of PAC manages to play on the idea of “life’s a stage”. PAC occupies 6.6 hectares in area, including the centre and the cultural park. It is a special performing arts center that combines functions in performance, education, exhibition and recreation. The original concept of the centre was mostly suggested by Lin Hwai-min, the artist director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in Taiwan, and Dr. Chen Chin-huang, the director of Hsin Kang Foundation of Culture and Education. The Southern Fuchien style architecture is contributed by Wong Wing-Hung, and the professional stage and the experimental theatre are designed by designer Lin Keh-hua.
