The present situation of Polish scenography and Polish theatre is in its background bound to the 19th century drama tradition originated by two outstanding Polish creative minds: Stanislaw Wyspiański (1869 to 1907) and Stanislaw Witkiewicz (1885—1939). They were not only revolutionaries in the realm of Polish drama but also versatile, innovative visual artists. They manifested in an indivisible manner the simultaneity of the theatrical and visual artistic imagination which in the course of time produced the generation of Tadeusz Kantor (born 1915) and Józef Szajna (born 1922). Stage designers presented at the Prague Quadrennial 1983 were influenced by the student theatre movement which rapidly developed since the 60's and by the continually expanding range of media absorbed by the visual arts. They did not want to adapt themselves, in a more or less perfect manner to the present situation in the theatre, but rather they wanted to put into the theatre their own concepts and experiences, searching for a theatre that would enable them to realize their expressive intentions; thus they have been searching for the place of the theatre in everyday life and in their own understanding of art. At this Prague Quadrennial we present Wieslaw Karolak, Leszek Madzik, Ryszard Winiarski and Jan Berdyszak. In a variety of ways they create their own theatre or co-create theatre. Yet what is essential and selfreferring in their work is that it springs from visual concepts and the visual imagination. And their endeavours are intended to be universally significant and not merely confined to the theatre or be a reflection concerning it.
