The end of the seventies and the beginning of the eighties mark a period of significant renewal and continuing efforts in Hungarian theatre arts. The structure of theatre management and operation was modified, new workshops and new individual artists entered the scene, showing their artistic mark and the means of expression, the ideological and professional sensitivity of directing and acting were growing richer. In parallel, interest in the separate factors of theatre arts (directing, acting, dramaturgy, scenography etc.) became more vivid too. Thus this period can boast of a further development also in Hungarian designing. It became surrounded by an increased theoretical activity (books, albums, catalogues were published or are actually in preparation), a fact which made critical interest more intense and thus the analysis of scenography was elevated to a more professional level. All this explains the tendency of organizing some comprehensive surveys. During this period the Triennial for Stage and Costume Design in Mishkolc took place for the third time, followed by a national exhibition in Budapest, practically the first of its kind. While organizing individual exhibitions which often follow educational purposes too, our designers embarked upon a new and important project: prepared by a long and careful workshop activity, in April 1983 a nation-wide exhibition of stage and costume design in the theatre and television opened at the Budapest Art Gallery, a manifestation so far unequalled in purpose and size in our country. Its function was a double one: while presenting the different products of scenography, it also permitted the selection of Hungarian exhibits for the 1983 Prague Quadrennial. After an interruption of almost fifteen years, the Budapest School of Fine Arts proceeded once more to the training of designers and the first students graduated from the school are already at work, together with their colleagues trained abroad, in Prague, Bratislava and Leningrad. Their number was further increased by some fresh arrivals from the ranks of architects, industrial designers and painters. The present set is demonstrating manifold gifts and it is a good thing that older and younger benefit equally from contracts and commissions. In spite of constant efforts at renewal, one can hardly witness unreasonable generation conflicts. An additional fortunate moment may be discovered in the fact that there is hardly any separation between television and theatre artists; they enjoy collaboration, organize common exhibitions and work respectively in each others medium. Thus the designing and the workshops of Hungarian Television are integral parts of our scenography. The range of our designing art is wide indeed, reaching from the predominance of pictorial quality to constructivist space compositions, to the „theatre of rags and tatters" and to happening-like collective works, implying continuous experiments with instruments and materials. At the same time one can witness an ever growing respect for the craft: This respect is particularly illustrated by the trend of dynamic realism in costume design; the principal part of the Hungarian exhibits is supplied by the followers of this trend. As for our stage designers, they prove their conscious use of theatrical space construction chiefly by means of their maquettes, while Hungarian architects distinguished themselves by the reconstruction of several older theatre buildings and by designing cultural centres suited for theatrical productions too. For the first time in the history of the Prague Quadrennial we show student work too, wishing thus to prove the talent, imagination and stylistic sensitivity of the new generation.
