Kuba

Limited to the narrow framework of the capital´s theatres up to 1959, Cuban theatre selection and style reflected the taste of the bourgeoisie, the latter being almost its exclusive audience. This panorama only had few valuable exceptions. It was with the triumph of the revolution and the coming of socialism that the indispensable premises for a qualitative transformation of theatre in our country were created. A substancially new public, artists liberated from economic insecurity, a high social appreciation of the theatre worker characterize the environment that at that time made up our young theatre movement. Theatre outburst in the sixties allowed designers to meet the challenge of a wide and new repertoire and to solve the problems posed by stage directors from a more audacious position. It is at this moment that theatrical design in Cuba abandons a transcendental realism for more contemporary ways of expression. An important sector of outstanding Cuban designers began their work in that period. Having started their career as architects or plastic artists, they marked our stages with their lasting imprint. Favoured by an absolute formal freedom of expression, they have developed very personal styles ranging from voluptuous forms and baroque colours to acute and deep rationalism. These are the outstanding characteristics that can be found in the works of Eduardo Arrocha and Raúl Oliva respectively. Younger designers educated at the National School of Arts (created by the revolution) began sprouting as promising artists. Notwithstanding these achievements, development of design has been hindered by an insufficient development of the technological and material foundations and by the absence of theoretical elaboration by the artist themselves. The steps taken to overcome these hindrances and the increasingly concious awareness of the richness of our cultural legacy allow us to expect a more mature period that will without doubt enlighten the nuances that will characterize Cuban theatrical design within the current trends of contemporary design.
