Bulharsko

Participation in the Prague Quadrennial 1983 provides Bulgarian stage designers with the opportunity of showing visitors from Czechoslovakia, as well as specialists from abroad and stage designers from the whole world, their creative strivings and artistic intentions, as they have been implemented on theatrical stages during the most recent four years. Bulgarian stage designers remain true to the tradition of realizing their full potential as artistic creators and in cooperation with stage directors proving this by the outcome of their work. Recently, the Bulgarian theatre has been concentrating its attention on both classical and contemporary drama. For this reason this time our exposition is more varied, both from the point of view of the plays selected and the artistic media of expression chosen. Bulgarian stage design remains true to playwrights and the spirit of their time, but attempts to interpret them in a new way, with stage realism, but true to the style and genre of the play's basic idea and reality. Since we have mentioned reality, it should be stressed that the Bulgarian theatre has at its disposal a well equipped material foundation (several well equipped theatrical buildings and auditoriums), which make it possible to turn stage designs into very good actual productions. The Prague Quadrennials has greatly influenced Bulgarian stage design, because they have provided an opportunity for a comparison of its own endeavours with modern trends existing in the theatre throughout the world, as well as the possibility of learning. A new generation of stage designers which has recently made its appearance, has brought with it a new and fresh approach to the theatre, as well as a sense of the modern and it is this which we have attempted to stress in our exposition. We consider the Prague Quadrennial to be an accumulator or battery of sorts, full of innovations, which are for us a source of new ideas concerning artistic media of expression which have newly appeared in the theatre and have enriched stage design throughout the world.
